Attempts to categorize Actress may be futile; Darren Cunningham's experimental techno-haze-dream-beat project earned him major critical praise last year with the journey-like full-length R.I.P, a staple on most discerning end-of-year lists. Now we get a taste of what tricks Actress wants to play on our minds this time with the equally mystifying Silver Cloud EP.

The release kicks off with a sequence of blips in a static cloud, repeating like a secret code to activate muted kicks and distant melodies. Every sound on Voodoo Posse Chronic Illusion seems just out of reach, with a brief vocal guide to offer a faint glimmer of hope before everything slowly starts to disintegrate. Floating In Ecstasy is the afterlife of those sounds--shrouded in wind, floating underneath a sample that suggests one hell of a trip. It's like the music of Burial was turned inside out, hit by a train, and had its pieces scattered in a glorious mess on the tracks--a scary and intriguing thing to behold. Silver Cloud Dream Come True is the most straightforward of the three, an introvertive hip-hop beat that doesn't have much purpose but still manages to hypnotize.

Like his previous work, Actress's Silver Cloud EP comes wrapped in uncertainty, but beneath the surface is a producer with meticulous attention to detail. Sound design is on point and the music manages to evoke plenty feeling, however strange it may be. One thing is for certain--Actress's sound is entirely his own, and it's impossible not to take notice. Find the vinyl release over at Discogs.
